Short Stirrup Club - Confirmation Clinic

Welcome to The Confirmation Clinic page! Each month I will post 3 horses on this page. I will find anonymous horses out on the internet so we (hopefully) won't insult anybody's horse! Look at each horse and decide how you would pin them in a model class. Submit your placings and why you pinned them that way. Then we'll tally the results and see what the consensus is for the ribbons.

This month I have chosen 3 Warmblood geldings between 8 and 12 years old. As a hunter/jumper/equitation judge, pin the horses according to which horse you think would do the best in a hunter/jumper show career.

Gelding #1

Gelding #2

Gelding #3

You be the judge and click HERE to submit your placings and WHY you placed them that way.

Here's what you've said about this bunch of horses:

1-3-2
I placed gelding on top because he is balanced end to end. He is proportionate and smooth in appearance. Also, the gelding has adequate muscle for his frame and has a nice, large round hip. He has the longest leanest neck and has a good shoulder angle.

Horse three was my reserved champion because he was plainer appearing. Also, the gelding was sharper over the withers then horse one. I placed him above gelding two though because he most closer resembled my first place horse.

I left horse two at the bottom. He was courser in appearance and didn’t seem as balanced as the other two geldings. The grey was also thicker in the neck.

All in all though all three horses were pretty decent geldings.

I think that number 3 is the winner. he has strong hindquarters and nice long legs. I think he looks like he could be really powerful out there!
In second is number one. It was really hard to choose between the two, but he looks a little weak in the front end.
Number 2 is nice but his hindquarters are too small.

Gelding 3 looks the best because he looks obediant and he has perfect pousture. It looks to me like I want to ride this horse.

For a hunter/showjumping perspective my placings are:

1st - Gelding #1
Of the 3, he oozes presence. Nice shoulder and back end. Area behind wither is questionable but again could be angle of pix. Legsappear straight and sat underneath with short cannons.

2nd - Gelding #3
A nice stamp of horse of lighter hunter type. Forelegs slightly behind and hip to buttock a little short. Else a well presented tidy horse

3rd - Gelding #2
From the view given, I find this horse a little long in the back and possibly over at the knee re the near fore (this could just be the angle of the pix). Appears to have a rump which falls away. On plus side, nice length of rein and looks like could be a geniune sort

First - #3 – This was a hard choice over #1, but the reason I placed him first was because his legs are a bit longer and he looks a little stronger in the shoulder than #1. He has a nice strong neckline and strong rear quarters. He has a very powerful look about him that I thought would serve a hunter jumper well for stamina and take-off power.

Second - #1 - This horse is absolutely beautiful. I would have liked to see his pasterns to determine if he has a good degree there, but over all he is a strong horse with good shoulder and hind quarters. He seems light so he would do great at jumping also, but his shoulder looked a little less built than #3.

Third - #2 – This horse has a nice neckline and strong clean legs. His rear quarters did not look as well defined as the others, nor did his shoulders. I think he would be a great starter horse for hunter jumper, but would sort of cap off, if you know what I mean. I think he would not be able to compete in the same league as the others in the show ring.

Honestly, I think all three horses would make great hunters. I love doing confirmation clinics and used to enjoy a similar article in an equestrian magazine that I once read. But they stopped doing the clinics. Thank you to whoever has developed this site. I am bookmarking you for sure! Thanks for letting me play along.

Here's what I think:

1st - Gelding #1
This is obviously a gorgeous animal. His head and neck are just beautiful and his shoulder is long and powerful looking. His hind end is well-muscled and proportioned and gives the impression that he could clear a very large jump. The tall grass and wraps prevent us from seeing his legs, but I am guessing that they would follow along with the rest of his ideal confirmation.

2nd - Gelding #3
I really like this horse too, but more as a hunter prospect than a jumper (the first horse could probably do either as well as dressage). He has a nice classic head and a long neck that also ties in nicely to a long shoulder. He has a lot of depth at his girth and that depth continues all the way to his hind quarters. I like that. His worst flaw, in my opinion, is his hind leg which is very straight. It is sufficiently muscled but you can draw a straight line right down his leg. This could prevent him from being able to do the really big jumps. His front legs aren't perfect either. I think he is slightly over at the knee or tied in at the knee, and his ankles are pretty round and puffy-looking. Even so, I would welcome him in my barn in a heartbeat!

3rd - Gelding #2
This horse looks like a nice guy. He has a sweet expression on his face and he has a pretty head and a long, long neck. I would be afraid that he might be a little heavy on his forehand, though, with all that neck. He does have a very long back, and his hind quarters do not appear to be as muscled and powerful as they could be to propel that long neck and back. His legs look very solid and thick (although some of that could be the long coat), which would probably hold up well with a career in jumping. I wouldn't turn this horse away either, but comparing him to the other two, he would be my third choice.
